Heritage, Federation & Terrace Painting – Inner West & Bayside
Residential painting · Quotes and work are carried out by our licensed partner painting company (residential and commercial) and, occasionally, other licensed local painters.
Much of the Inner West and older St George is Victorian, Federation and interwar housing, and many streets sit in heritage conservation areas. These homes need lead-safe preparation, timber and joinery repairs, and colour schemes that suit the period.
What's usually included
- Lead-safe preparation (wet scraping/sanding, containment)
- Timber repairs to fretwork, barge boards, verandahs and sashes
- Period-appropriate colour schemes
- Iron lacework, front fences and gates
- Guidance on whether your council needs a colour approval
Cost
Heritage work costs more than a standard repaint because preparation and detailing take longer. Sydney Elite Painters' 2026 guide puts Victorian/period home exteriors at around $12,000–$20,000+.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need council approval to change my house colour in a heritage area?
It depends on the council and the property. In many heritage conservation areas, repainting in the same colours is fine but a colour change to the street façade may need approval or a check. Ask your council (Inner West, Bayside, Georges River or Canterbury-Bankstown) before you commit.
Does my old house have lead paint?
Lead paint was used in most Australian homes built before 1970 (NSW LeadSmart). Older layers should be treated as lead unless tested, and prepared with lead-safe methods.
Can original heritage colours be matched?
Paint companies publish heritage colour ranges, and old layers can be sampled to guide a scheme.
